You are invited to read to our local classrooms this year throughout the week of March 16th – 20th, 2026!
How Does Agricultural Literacy Week (ALW) Work?
In celebration of New York agriculture, volunteers throughout the state will read a book with an agricultural theme to elementary students, with a focus on second grade classrooms. Farmers, FFA and 4-H members, adults engaged in agricultural careers, and others engaged in our food system volunteer to enthusiastically engage your students in a paired hands-on activity related to the book to extend learning.
Start to finish the program takes approximately 40 minutes per classroom.
For more information and educator resources, visit the official ALW website.
Your involvement in reading to students during Agricultural Literacy Week would be an exciting opportunity to increase agricultural literacy and provide a high-quality educational learning experience for children in your community to learn about nutrition and the food system.

Throughout the year, life on a farm is filled with growth and joy, patience and renewal.
On a farm, each season arrives with new jobs to do—crops to plant, animals to tend to, and fields to harvest. Readers get an insider’s look at what spring, summer, fall, and winter look like on a family farm, from adorable baby animals to rumbling tractors and pumpkins to pies. This sweet, rhyming story is perfect for young readers, whether their home is on a farm or not.
FREE! - all books and activity materials are prepared and paid for by NYAITC. If over 20 classrooms register, additional activity materials and books may be sponsored by a Harvest NY Grant.
