Silvopasture Development on Farms

  • Wednesday, March 25, 2026, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Did you know, silvopasture systems can reduce heat stress in livestock so effectively that cattle under tree shade have been shown to lower their core body temperature by up to 2–3°F compared to open pasture?

A growing number of farmers in the Northeast have begun developing silvopastures in their production systems. Silvopasture is a useful technique to better prevent soil erosion with the secure root systems of trees. With the prevention of soil erosion, silvopasture systems can help with the retention of landscapes, and with the potential of heat stress the shade of the trees can provide a cooler environment for livestock on pastures.

This workshop will teach the values of silvopasture systems to mitigate events with climate change, the benefits of certain trees for silvopasture, how to establish trees, silvopasure design, and long-term orchard management.
