Planning for Ag Success: Municipal Strategies for Farmland Preservation

  • Monday, December 8, 2025, 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

This workshop is part of a collaborative effort between Sullivan County, CCE Sullivan, and the Orange County Land Trust to explore long-term strategies for preserving working lands and rural character in the region. Participants will learn what Community Preservation Acts are, how they are implemented across the Hudson Valley, and what steps municipalities and counties can take to adopt them, zoning tools and planning practices that support farmland preservation and agricultural viability. Gain a deeper understanding of how local land use policies can encourage sustainable land stewardship, reduce farmland fragmentation, and promote farm-friendly development.

The webinar will open with an overview of Sullivan County’s growing farmland preservation efforts and partnership with Orange County Land Trust, followed by presentations from Michael Sweeton (OCLT) who will break down what a CPA is, how the funds are collected and used, and what steps local communities can take to implement one. You will also learn about zoning practices and examples that explore how zoning and land use planning can support working farms and learn how to apply farm-friendly strategies within their own municipalities. Leave with actionable insights, planning tools, and a stronger network of peers committed to farmland preservation.

Planning and Zoning board members may receive 2 training credits.
