Our Buy Local "Sullivan Fresh" Campaign is a community based initiative that evolved out of expressed interest to sustain local agriculture and build a stronger local food system in Sullivan and surrounding counties. Our goals are to foster the environmental, economic, and social vitality of our community by increasing the connections between consumers and farmers.
Through outreach, marketing, and special initiatives we seek to raise individual and institutional awareness about the benefits of buying fresh locally grown and made products and to make local food an integral part of daily life. We are currently working on increasing farm to restaurant connections, establishing farm to institution connections, and providing access to fresh and nutritious food to low-income families and the general public.
Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County is involved in a number of buy local initiatives, with support from our partners. These initiatives include a Farmers’ Market Promotion project with the Sullivan County Division of Planning & Environmental Management, a Farm to Institution planning project, and the “Sullivan Fresh” initiative. CCESC also helps to promote a number of different “buy local” campaigns, such as Pure Catskills, Hudson Valley Bounty, and the “Made in the Sullivan County Catskills” marketplaces and campaigns.
Sullivan County now has more farmers' markets and more ways to pay for local farm products to make supporting our farmers even easier.
