Monthly family caregiver support groups are offered throughout Sullivan County, hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC)’s Caregiver Resource Center (CRC). These groups are intended to provide both support and new resources to the informal family caregiver who assists an aging, ill, or disabled adult relative or friend. Bonnie Lewis, RN, CCESC dependent care educator, and volunteers running support groups use the AARP curriculum “Caring for Those You Care About” to facilitate meetings, along with various other educational resources.

The following support groups are open to the public:

  • “Share the Care” group meets at 10:00 am on the first Wednesday of each month at Lander’s River Café in Callicoon, NY.
  • “Caring for the Caregiver” group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Daniel Pierce Library in Grahamsville, NY. Call ahead for the meeting time.
  • “Caregiver Conversations” group meets at 6:00 pm on the last Wednesday of each month at CCESC’s Extension Education Center in Liberty, NY.
  • “Alzheimer’s Support” groups offer three meeting options: 1:00 pm on the third Thursday of each month at Action Toward Independence in Monticello, NY; 6:00 pm on the first Tuesday of each month at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility in Liberty (run by volunteers); 1:00 pm on the first Wednesday of each month at Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty (run by volunteers); or participate via telephone at 9:30 am on the third Tuesday of each month (facilitated out of the CCESC office in Liberty). These groups are intended for caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

These meetings provide an opportunity to listen, learn, and share in a comfortable space while finding assistance with caregiving concerns. The support groups offer a safe place for:

  • Sharing feelings, frustrations, and practical ways of coping
  • Meeting other caregivers who are in similar situations and can offer practical advice
  • Discovering new information and resources

Registration for these meetings is not required in advance but is encouraged in case of a schedule change. More information can be obtained by calling CCESC at 845-292-6180 or emailing sullivan@cornell.edu. In the event of special needs, please contact the office.

The Caregiver Resource is a partnership between Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County, Alzheimer’s Association, and the Sullivan County Office for the Aging. The CRC provides science-based, educational programs and support to caregivers assisting individuals who are aging, ill, disabled, or with dementia-related diseases including Alzheimer’s disease.
