May is Older American’s Month! Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC)’s Caregiver Resource Center and Older Adults Transitional Support (OATS) collaborative celebrate by co-hosting a free Senior Exposition on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Monticello Fire House on 23 Richardson Ave. in Monticello. The Senior Expo will showcase area services and provide many health and wellness demonstrations, designed to help seniors and their caregivers make informed choices that can improve their lives.
OATS encourages seniors to remember, “To own it, age out loud!”
Each May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads our nation’s celebration of Older Americans Month (OAM). ACL designed the 2017 OAM theme, Age Out Loud, to give aging a new voice—one that reflects what today’s older adults have to say.
This theme shines a light on many important trends. More than ever before, older Americans are working longer, trying new things, and engaging in their communities. They’re taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advocating for themselves and others. What it means to age has changed, and OAM 2017 is a perfect opportunity to recognize and celebrate what getting older looks like today.
Older American’s Month began in 1963, to acknowledge the contributions of older people. Led by the Administration for Community Living, the annual observance offers the opportunity to learn about, support, and celebrate our nation’s older citizens.
The goal of OATS is to assist older residents to remain in the home and the community, safely, for as long as possible.
The Caregiver Resource Center is a co-partnered program between Cornell Cooperative Extension and Office for the Aging of Sullivan County and is supported by a grant from the NYS Office for the Aging’s Caregiver Program.
