According to Michigan State University research; Youth who have a dog in their household benefit with increased self-esteem, when a pet shows unconditional love, it boosts a child's self-esteem. Being responsible also develops self-esteem in young children. Having a dog also often requires a gentle touch and learning about boundaries. This will develop respect for others in young children which is a difficult skill to learn at a young age.

Youth will learn about the needs of their puppy, begin developing a relationship with their dog, start in the beginning stages of basic obedience training, and be able to socialize their puppies in a safe environment.

  • Develop a relationship between the youth handler and their puppy
  • Start socialization with other dogs and people
  • Begin training the dog in sit, down, stay
  • Develop an activity schedule for the dog
  • Intro to Canine Good Citizen program.

If all 6 weeks are completed, participants will have the opportunity to take the STAR Puppy test.

Dogs must be under 1 yr to be eligible for this program. Attendance is required at all 6 classes to earn the STAR Puppy certificate.

When an evaluator signs a dog’s CGC test, the evaluator is essentially attesting that the dog was observed to perform all of the skills at a specific test. Although we can try our very best to be responsible, there are no guarantees for the future behavior of animals or humans.

Contact the CCESC office to request any special accommodations. Registration is requested in advance online.

*Participants are required to adhere to 6ft apart physical distance standards, wear face coverings that cover the mouth and nose, and sign an Acknowledgement of Risk to attend all CCE Sullivan in-person programs.*
